Agenda for Change covers NHS staff across the UK, so the core annual leave levels are the same in Scotland and Wales as in England. The main differences are bank holidays and local health board rules.

Annual leave levels

  • Under 5 years: 27 days
  • After 5 years: 29 days
  • After 10 years: 33 days

These are full-time figures. Part-time staff get the same levels scaled to their contracted hours.

NHS Wales

Wales has the same bank holidays as England, so most NHS Wales staff get 8 bank holidays on top of their annual leave. Our NHS Annual Leave Calculator works as-is for Wales.

NHS Scotland

Scotland has different bank holiday dates from England, including 2 January and St Andrew's Day. NHS Scotland boards set which public holidays apply locally, so the number and dates can differ. Check your board's public holiday list.

Full-time hours in NHS Scotland can also differ from 37.5, which changes how leave converts into hours. Use your own contracted full-time hours when you work out your leave.

Check your local policy

Carry-over limits, booking rules and leave years are set locally in all UK nations. Your health board or trust policy has the final word.
